Q: Which areas / wards are we expected to audit?
A: HHA recommends a selection of acute inpatient wards where there is the highest possible risk for HCAIs to occur and where you are most likely for the program to have an impact. These can include: ICU, renal, surgical and medical wards.
Top
Q: Do the wards need to be the same every audit period?
A: This can be determined by each facilty but if the same wards are audited each survey period the trend of HH compliance and infection rates can be observed over time. This can be a quite powerful tool and often helps with your feedback to your hospital management staff. Other wards can be audited at any other time and given there local feedback but ideally send into HHA the same wards each audit period.

Q: Is there a limit to how many staff we can have trained as auditors?
A: No, there is no limit. However, full training can take a significant amount of time so choose the most relevant people first.
Top
Q: Once I am a 'gold standard' auditor can I train other staff?
A: Yes. You can train other staff, but we would advise that you practice with the 5 Moments, the audit tool, the database and the clinical scenarios in your hospital before you attempt to train others. You need to be very familiar and confident with the 5 Moments program before you teach others.
Top
Q: How do I train other staff?
A: Once you have attended a HHA workshop you will be given all the necessary training tools on CD, and a copy of the 5 Moments training DVD. These tools outline the two day program required to train other staff. The format and timing of your training program may vary in each facility but dont rush it.The following topics should be covered in your training:
Theorectical Component:
- The 5 Moments basics
- DVD
- The Audit Tool
- Database entry
- Written Quiz
Practical Component:
- Ward Practice (at least 100 Moments together)
- DVD Quiz

Q: Can the people I teach go on to train others?
A: No. If you require other people in your hospital / health service to be able to teach the 5 Moment program then they should also attend the full HHA workshop run in each state by the state coordinator. This ensures that the data that is submitted to HHA is as standardised as possible.

Q: Can I audit single rooms? If so, is there an easy way to do this?
A: Yes you can audit in single rooms, it usually takes a little longer, but is certainly possible. There is no easy way to do it, except that you must position yourself to be able to see all movement into and out of that room .
Top
Q: Is there any funding available?
A: The ACQSHC have funded HHA until the end of 2011 to implement the NHHI. Each jurisdiction is responsible for the sustainability of the program in their state.
Top
Q: What do I do if there is an emergency situation?
A: If you are trained to assist in an emergency situation, put your auditing equipment away and assist. If you are not trained to assist, step aside and leave your auditing for another time, or move to another area to audit. Patient safety always comes first.
